I guess they couldn’t include everything on the set, but that lot seemed of more historical interest than some of the other inclusions, and there seemed to be a fair amount of space on the CD – but I guess whatever they left off would have been of interest to someone.

Offline Always my annoyance with the Anthology CDs, their length. Had I been in charge I would have been aiming to get as close to 79 minutes as possible. The material is certainly there. It is the big difference between what they did and Dylan’s Bootleg Series (except in the case of his concert editions), he uses the available space.

That had me wondering too, was there an LP release which would have been problematic? I can see the 2 current CDs fitting on 3 LPs.

Offline The anthology discs were to be a listenable overview for casual fans and of interest to hardcore fans of what the beatles did so we would never have gotten complete auditions, bbc shows or concerts, remember it isn’t just the decca tapes that aren’t complete, we also have the Sweden concert in ’63 half filled, From Me To You at the London Palladium missing, Act Naturally from Blackpool Night Out (some of those were in the dvd set). Basically Apple aimed at pleasing both sides and so ultimately gave us a mushed result which left both sides unsatisfied.
There are also studio outtakes that were considered for inclusion that were cut near the end, Here Comes The Sun and an alternate Abbey Road medley being two. Rather have those than a poor Till There Was You . The only track from Decca that should have been on the Anthology and wasn’t is Love of The Loved, the only omitted Lennon/McCartney original (or should that be McCartney/Lennon?).

You made me think of something that I ran across recently, it’s a video of Dhani Harrison & George Martin at Abbey Road playing around with the Masters for ‘Here Comes The Sun ‘ and you can hear an electric guitar part which never made the cut, I like the connection that George Martin makes on Dhani’s comments about the odd timing of the song at the very end of the video…:-)

I always thought that ‘Take Good Care of My Baby’ was one of the better tracks from the Decca Tapes as well, unfortunately, it also showcases just why Pete Best had to be replaced. It’s very evident that he’s drumming along to the others instead of dictating the song himself, as Ringo would’ve. George Martin had said that “they lacked the binding force that a good drummer should give them” when discussing their first audition, and this song is an excellent example of just what Sir George was talking about, the drummer should be driving the song, not struggling to keep up as Pete obviously is here…:-)

Offline I think Take Good Care Of My Baby shows exactly why Decca went elsewhere; lacking any real excitement or drive it just feels incredibly restricted and safe. On stage the Beatles would have rocked this out yet here its just a bland 2 1/2 minute uninspired filler which would have been common place on albums all bands at the time were having shoved out with little thought by the record companies to fulfill the quota of 14 tracks. If recorded 13 1/2 months later it would have been balls to the wall, driven on by Ringo’s drumming and an energised bass by Paul, here both are missing.
It wasn’t just down to Pete that the Decca audition was average, all four were nervous and it feels like both Paul and John went into their shell a little going by the tape.

I have to disagree. What’s The New Mary Jane is one of my favorites songs of them, and it could have fit the White Album (though I’ll admit is not better than Not Guilty ; I am still astonished that that one didn’t even make it to the tracklist but Mary Jane did up to the last minute, and worse, WHP was actually released!). And I am referring to the original 6:40 mix, not the remix released on Anthology. I think that it could have replaced Revolution 9 (that one is also a ”song” I listen to from time to time, but Mary Jane could have been a better choice).
Let me take you down 'cause I'm going to...Strawberry Fields.

I love the Decca Audition. All the songs played there are great. One thing I have to note is that: It is not just Pete, all four were nervous in that audition, and as a result their performances aren’t that great, but also not disastrous; they are entertaining. Pete was not a bad drummer 
, but his personality was what didn’t match with the other three 
. If anyone here has heard his drumming on the Tony Sheridan recordings, he is actually pretty good. And while his drumming on Love Me Do on the EMI session is disastrous, Besame Mucho from the same session is actually good. But ultimately, Ringo was the right and best one that fitted perfectly with the others.

I can understand how irritating can be this song for you as some people are irritated with Revolution 9 . But for me, all three songs (even if WHP irritates me, like WTNMJ irritates you) have those bits and pieces to be discovered like you say.
