I think George was the MVP on this album, however, I agree with Quarryman that all four did some of their best work playing and writing on this album.

Sir Walter, I completely agree that George shone on this album in all of his songs. Listening to it, it seems like he came into his own as as good a songwriter as John and Paul. This momentum rose and peaked when he released All Things Must Pass .

And without his masterful guitarwork and songwriting help, Octopus Garden would be bland and forgettable. But with George’s intro lick and playing on the whole song, I cannot keep from smiling when I hear it.

^^I thought John played that lick…
And here I thought Dark Overlord was taking a break from the forum. I’m pretty sure George played it though since its kind of a lead lick, and he is credited with lead guitar.

I was sure that John played it (on his Telecaster), and I remember reading somewhere that that is what happened…Where’s DO when you need him?

I’m pretty sure it’s George, considering he’s credited and it sounds much more in his style than John’s.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

It’s George playing through a Leslie speaker.

For me, it’s between Paul and George, but I’m leaning more towards George, just for Something alone. I love that song

I like what they all brought to the table, but I’d have to go with Paul on this one. His contributions were significant here.

John is sneaky on this album. Paul and Ringo shine on Come Together , George’s guitar and Billy Preston’s organ work shines on I Want You and Sun King , the harmonies obviously are the best thing about Because . But I think John’s lyrics are really unique and interesting on his contributions to Abbey Road . Theyre similar to the second section of Happiness Is A Warm Gun ; abstract and ethereal but shrouded in a classic rhythm and blues sound. The driving rhythm of the words Come Together , Polythene Pam , Mean Mr. Mustard kind of disguise the fact that it is still very much psychedelic rock. Then you have a different approach on Because and Sun King and those are two of the most psychedelic songs ever (Sun King is the most and best psychedelic song of all time imho). I Want You is the exception to this because of how small the lyrical set is, of course many consider it John’s best song on Abbey Road .
With that said George’s peripheral work on Abbey Road is some of my favorite studio playing on any album. Its so tasteful and smooth, but matches the mood of any song. The guitar break on I Want You is probably the best thing he did on guitar while in the Beatles, aside from the short solo right after “the love you make” on The End . Pair that with two of his strongest songs George probably wins this, despite Paul primarily being the mind behind the Medley (which is the greatest accomplishment of their career, I wont go into detail about it here, but see many of my other posts throughout the years for more thoughts on the genius of the Medley.)
