Offline This made me think again – George and Ringo were the best. I find the Octopus’s Garden , Something and Here Comes The Sun the loveliest songs here. But part of the genius goes to incredible track listing. After long, dark I Want You, George splashes us with warm sun… incredible.

Not from Abbey Road , though. That’s easily the most famous, only Come Together even comes close to touching it.
I’d venture to I agree with several other people that Something comes pretty close too. That’s two George songs out of the 3 most famous on Abbey Road .
I have to give the nod to George, for writing those songs and his playing throughout the album. He has a lot of good jams. A close 2nd is Ringo, followed by Paul, then John. John last? Someone had to be.
I think this is Ringo’s best album. He’s good on MMT and Pepper’s -too.
I find it very interesting and a tribute to the power of their muse(s) that they were able to get together and give it their all for Abbey Road after the Let it Be fiasco.

Offline I would say George because his guitar playing is truly what made Abbey Road stand out to me, along with his use of the moog and of course his songs. AR also has his best vocals in The Beatles IMO. All-around I love everything he did on that album, and I wish we could’ve seen that side of him develop more.

@thisbirdhasflown If you’re talking about in the UK then Sgt. Pepper comes out on top, however worldwide sales and US sales both have Abbey Road as the best-selling Beatles album. So, it depends on which best-selling list you go for (or were brought up with, Americans will always have a different list of the best sellers as the catalogue was so different). I tend to go for the official worldwide listing, which Abbey Road tops.

Offline I go by the certified sales list, and excluded 1 as it’s a compilation, rather than one of the original albums.
1 is actually the best-selling Beatles album with certified sales of 21.6 million. Abbey Road 14.3 million. Sgt. Pepper 13.1 million.
There is some dispute over the accuracy of the figures, with 1 being the most accurate purely because of when it was released. Those are, however, the official sales figures.
Though all figures are obviously higher now.

Offline Well, George wrote the most popular songs that appear on Abbey Road .
But I also really like Paul with songs such as Golden Slumbers and Oh! Darling , etc.
So for me, it would be a tie between George and Paul.
Best dressed: either Ringo or Paul. Well if Paul would still be wearing the sandals, I would probably go for Ringo.

Offline I’m a huge John Lennon fan, but he obviously did not care about the Beatles by this point. To his credit, his output on the White Album was the best of any Beatle on any album. You can easily count 9 or 10 great songs he wrote in 1968, and that’s if you don’t include non White Album ones like Hey Bulldog and Across The Universe . Even Oh My Love was written that year. I’m willing to accept the fact that John was the least of the Beatles on Abbey Road , but it’s unfair to him to not consider everything he had done the year before. After all, he could have easily given in to George Martin’s request to reduce the White Album to one disc, allowing him to have some of his good White Album songs on Abbey Road .

Offline I’m actually not tremendously fond of ‘Abbey Road ‘ to be honest – although the production job on it is immense. However it has to be said that ringo’s performance on the album is outstanding. It’s a very uneven collection of beatle songs in my opinion and it holds together well due to no short part by his playing. His finest playing on any beatles record i would venture.

Offline The best thing on Abbey Road occured 2 years ago.
I was there then.
Anyway, George is definitely #1 for me, for the reasons Von Bontee mentioned on page 1. He was the most creative on this album, added a lot and really shone. People can say ”Well, he only had 2 songs, and Paul and John had way more they had to add, so that’s difficult, would the rest of George’s songs have been as good?”, but my dear friends, that’s not what this is about. George contributes 2 classics on this album, and my #1 favourite (okay, a shared first place with Strawberry Fields Forever ) Beatles song, Something . These 2 songs stood up to anything the others contributed and the reasons Von Bontee mentioned are the reasons George was the best.
After this Paul/Ringo. Ringo’s drumming throughout the album was outstanding, and Octopus Garden is one of my favourite Beatles songs too (believe it or not). Paul’s work is also great. The medley was a fantastic idea, and Golden Slumbers /Carry That Weight /The End is just a bunch of emotion. Hearing it live was just fantastic. Plus, he sang his heart out, and played some mean bass and guitar.
John didn’t really care anymore, but he contributed a few good ditties. Come Together , even though I don’t like it a lot, is a classic. Sun King and Because are great. I Want You has a cool ending but is too damn long, Polythene Pam is a bit of a nothing song and MMM is fun at best. It’s not like his contributions were bad, far from it even, but someone has to come last and this album is where the other Beatles simply outshone John.
Anyway, I wouldn’t change a thing about this album. This is one of my favourites and it’s pretty much perfect the way it is.

Offline I’ve just read through and I didn’t say what it looks like I said in posts 25 and 27.
My opinion is still that Something and Here Comes The Sun are not Abbey Road to me………I love the latter song …… never liked the former. It’s George’s Imagine and Paul’s Yesterday to me. Three great songs that accepted wisdom says I’m supposed to like that I’ve never got…….. No hope for me is there!
I didn’t think much of John’s contribution at the time. My first few plays were disappointing in that regard and I’d agree George outshone him. My favourite track was indeed Here Come the Sun…….
…..But I came ……in the end to regard this as George was just introducing Paul……..Because Paul really shone. If I ever listen to Something its for Paul’s melodic bass…….Most listens were of the medley. I couldn’t find much elsewhere that grabbed me………..So it’s the medley that’s Abbey Rd to me. and that’s stuck..A nod to George’s guitar though……On every track except Something ….too soft a tone there…… no bite I know it’s a love song but there’s nothing in the way it moves that attracts me.
I know for some of you, what I’ve said is akin to having just shot Lassie.
Lately I’ve been re-assessing John’s work. I see it as stronger these days than I’d thought. Still I give the ‘Wigwam award for this album’ to James Paul McCartney of Liverpool.
But bless them all.
