Paul, George and John in that order. Paul’s solo (first two bars) is a standard rocking one with that left-handed “bite” only he’s capable of, George (next two bars) has that great “melodic” guitar sound synonymous with his style, and John (last two bars) is all heavy, unkempt and distorted. Once you listen to it a few times and can catch on, it’s pretty easy to tell who’s who.

They are, and Ringo holds up his end with his “solo.” They recorded that, and then they were done (for the most part)… talk about going out on top.

I don’t know if they could have topped it, but I’ve always believed that it was best that they went out on top. They put aside their issues (for the most part) to do Abbey Road , they got that last statement in, they went out firmly as the best band in the world at the top of their game and said to the rest of rock and roll “OK kids, we did our part… now it’s your turn.” They didn’t have a long decline (Let It Be was more of a short drive into the valley), they didn’t have that moment when they realized they can’t and shouldn’t do it anymore but carried on anyway, as the Stones have done, and they left you wanting more. They lived up to Neil Young’s credo: Better to burn out than fade away.

I’m of the firm belief that they shouldn’t change anything. I think the next one wouldn’t have been as perfect, Abbey Road is the perfect final album. In my opinion, of course.

I too doubt they could’ve topped it – in fact, I wonder how many takes it took to get that perfect one (’cause it IS perfect, such remarkable fluidity, it could’ve been one guy playing the whole thing himself!) Can you imagine the pressure they must’ve been under? each one not wanting to flub his two bars and force an entirely new take?
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I guessed he he didn’t want anything to spoil the vibe between them of that last hurrah!
This actually makes me feel so found of ‘The End ‘ that I don’t think I could do without this track.

Offline Paul goes first, followed by George, and finished by John all distorted. You can hear the difference I think they either do 1 bar or maybe 2 per cycle. They all really represent there sound and style. Pauls is great musically, Georges sounds the most professional and technically sounds the cleanest and fastest, and Johns is distorted and heavy. Apparently they did it in one take recording on same track I believe. Think Geoff said it was there last real Beatles session.

Wetroosa funny you mention that quote. Was just reading one of Johns last interview either Play Boy or Rolling Stone and he disagrees with that quote. Says he’d rather fade out and live into old age then to go out quick. Just interesting you quoted it and someone actually asked him his opinion on it in an interview.

I’m sure he wanted to carry on with his own music until he physically couldn’t do it anymore. (In the RKO interview, he discussed wanting to perform live again, so he would have done it, I’m sure.) But as far as the Beatles goes, well, I still believe they ended it perfectly. But I can easily see John rocking on into old age with Yoko or someone else, maybe even with Sean.
