Will leave this here as its not news and cant think where else to put it. Wogblog has got a few pics of Abbey Road , two a month after the photos were taken (one of the street, one of the EMI studios) and one supposedly from the morning that the cover pics were taken.
The angle/perspective of the first picture in the Wogblog link
is the one @Joe saw as he was coming into view in his birthday video. I recognize that curving, grassy area.
EDIT: I have the full video if anyone is interested in seeing it.

@Ahhh Girl Yeah, if you walk from the St John’s Wood underground station you turn that corner just before arriving at the zebra crossing. Streetview link.
Hopefully this pic will put to bed the rumours that the crossing was moved sometime after the Abbey Road photo was taken.

Nice streetview angle.
For my previous European excursions, I “walked” many of the routes I wanted to take via Google’s streetview. That way, when we were actually there, I had clues of what to look for so I could keep us on the right track. @Joe, you’ve gotten me excited about taking a a virtual walk from the St John’s Wood tube station to the zebra crossing to prepare for the real thing. Thank you.

@Ahhh Girl I think it’s one walk you won’t have trouble with. Just follow the steady trickle of tourists down Grove End Road from the Tube (underground) station. Don’t forget to swing by Cavendish Avenue after you’ve written your name on the studio wall!
For any trip to London, the book The Beatles’ London (by Lewisohn et al) is a must.

Wogblog article questioning whether the mystery man on the Abbey Road cover was indeed Paul Cole as he himself claimed.

That reminds me (albeit a far more benign mystery) of the “Umbrella Man” who was on the “grassy knoll” in Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, the (sunny) day on which President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.

Their argument makes perfect sense. I wonder if the mystery man is still alive, or if he even knew he was on the cover. Or doesn’t/didn’t come out as he doesn’t/didn’t want recognition.
I didn’t know until I read Kevin Harrington’s book that he did a trial run a couple of days before using stand-ins instead of the Beatles.

Macmillan took six shots. The one you have used is shot two, @Pineapple Records. Paul kicked his sandals off after this shot. Two with sandals, four without, the shot used was the fifth.

On @Joe’s page about the cover photography session (Hey, Joe, maybe you can link your blog post to this thread), he mentions that Macmillan used a Hasselblad camera. Here’s a page that goes through the history of Hasselblad cameras. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tec…..tm#history
I wonder if he had the 1959 ~ 1969: Super Wide C camera.

My Abbey Road poster came yesterday, and its great to see the cover in more detail, but unfortunately I ripped it on the right as i was getting it out the packaging, so there is a tear through John’s torso
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
