Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

it’s almost worth the price of the whole set to have a pristine copy of Goodbye. Gile’s mix here is better than it seems because Abbey Road was the Beatles album that least needed a remix. Also Martin Sr.’s strings on Something are one of the best things he ever added to a Beatle record.

Folk far clever than me have analysed, compared and computerised ‘Goodbye’ and have come to the conclusion that Apple simply used a bootleg copy, and in their opinion better copies of it exist. It wouldn’t be the first time Apple has done such things; the promo ‘Penny Lane ‘ on the deluxe ‘Pepper’ is, without doubt, a much poorer source of what is out there circulating on a number of fan sites and collections, and they had to fix ‘Live At The BBC ‘ due to their fiddlings and using inferior sources for the 1994 release. Heck, many of the officially released BBC recordings were simply taken from bootlegs.

It’s not surprising in truth and due to how such things were handled back in the day, unsurprising. Far superior sources for the solo videos exist than what have been officially released, and it doesn’t when Apple (and others) try to be smart only to end up ballsing it up (attempts at colourising the Beatles for example).

I’ve just seen that the Super Deluxe Edition of Abbey Road is currently selling for £8.99 on Amazon UK*

*At least I think it is.

I wish the White Album would go down to a more manageable price

Edit: It was – but it seems to have gone up again. I am very confused now.a-hard-days-night-john-3

Probably a temporary glitch which was quickly fixed. Happens occasionally and most sales fail before shipping is completed.

A few people managed to get their hands on a copy at that price (it lasted for about 30 minutes).

I have a question about The Long One. I think the vocals in Golden Slumbers are different than on the original release. In fact, I think it might be one of the most emotionally raw performances I’ve ever heard from Paul. Where could I find out more about the different takes?

Also, the missing vocals from The End wigged me out.

My hot take is that after the Beatles split they went down the paths of spiritualism, solipsism, alcoholism, and Paul McCartney

They recorded GS on 2 July with a guide vocal, further overdubs on the 3rd, with Paul doing the vocal on the rough mix of the medley on the 4th. There were some more overdubs, including some vocals, done on the 30th, which was the day they did the rough mix. Paul rerecorded his GS vocal the next day.

I think it’s a shame he re-recorded them. Listening to The Long One was the first time it occurred to me that he might be singing to his So Tired friend.

My hot take is that after the Beatles split they went down the paths of spiritualism, solipsism, alcoholism, and Paul McCartney

Hoping you guys could shed some light on a few questions I have regarding the Super Deluxe Abbey Road album.

Some of the tracks are titled “Reduction Mix”, “The Long One” is listed as “Trial Edit”. Just wondering what these terms mean.

This brings me to my second question. Could you guys list any differences you’re aware of between “The Long One (Trial Edit & Mix)” & the actual album version?

Thanks!

The trial edit, is just that; put together to see how everything stood and what was required to finish it off. Some bits changed, others added, some removed. There are a number of differences ranging from the minor (John’s comments being louder during the musical section going into ‘SCITTBW’) to major (‘TE’ is very minimal with the vocals and  solo guitar parts missing as they were still to be recorded). A few others are that cross fade from ‘YNGMYM’ into ‘SK’ being an organ part here, the orchestra missing from ‘GS’/’CTW’ and different Paul vocals in ‘YNGMYM’, ‘GS’ and ‘CTW’. Oh, and ‘HM’ is in-between ‘MMM’ and ‘PP’ whereas it was removed and placed at the end on the album.

A reduction mix is where instruments and/or tracks are mixed either out, down or together to usually create space for further overdubs or simply to get rid of them. The Beatles were using 8 tracks to record on by the time of ‘AR’ but it was rarely enough so they had to combine tracks to free up more space to be able to carry out further work.

Man, I really dig the I Want You Trident Recording Session and Reduction Mix. The instrumental having a different flavour to the released version is great as an alternative, particularly the gospel like sound.
