As we all know, until they made Sgt. Pepper , it was The Beatles’ standard (or was it actually Parlophone’s?) to put 14 songs on each of their albums. However, because Ringo came down with tonsilitis on the day the last recording session for A Hard Day’s Night was scheduled, that album ended up with only 13. Had that unfortunate incident not happened, what do you suppose that album’s 14th track would’ve been? The most obvious choices would be either of the 2 songs John, Paul and George ended up recording demos of that day (“No Reply ” and “You Know What to Do”) or a cover song (“Shout” maybe?). “No Reply ” is out, since at that point John was still intending to give the song to Tommy Quickly to record (it also would’ve screwed up Beatles For Sale ). And having one single cover song on an album otherwise entirely consisting of originals just seems kind of awkward to me (despite that’s how Help ! almost ended up being when they abandoned “If You’ve Got Trouble ” for Ringo’s token vocal spot in favor of “Act Naturally “; of course, they would then end up dropping “Wait ” as well, and replaced it with the already-long-since-recorded “Dizzy Miss Lizzy ” ). So my best bet is George’s sophomore composition “You Know What to Do.” This attempted finished version using the demo from Anthology 1 at least makes it sound as though it ultimately could’ve been a respectable song. Granted, it still would’ve easily been AHDN ‘s weakest track, but, oh, well.

No idea what it would have been but more than likely it would have had a Ringo lead vocal since he doesnt have one which was the norm. Dont Pass Me By was around at the time with Ringo mentioning it during a BBC Radio show and an interview so maybe that would have appeared 4 years earlier with a less C&W more traditional beatles ’64 sound.

But Ringo DID have a vocal spot on the “Long Tall Sally ” EP with “Matchbox ;” not even George had a lead vocal on that. “Don’t Pass Me By ” languished on the back burner for years because the others deemed it too much of a throwaway song to put it on one of their albums. Of course, when the anything-goes White Album came around, it finally had an opening.

Indeed but the rule appears to be that Ringo got a lead vocal on each album as did George. The only other album where he doesnt is Let It Be (Magical Mystery Tour originally being a 6-track ep in the UK).
I dont know if Ringo was being serious or joking but in that episode of Top Gear (broadcast 16th August 1964) he seems to want Paul to sing it. Certainly the chorus is there as Paul sings it in a not very serious manner.

I maintain the opinion that “I’ll Cry Instead ” would’ve been a great one for Ringo to sing. The 14th track could’ve been some other Lennon/McCartney composition, whichever spare one they had floating around at the time (assuming they’d want to preserve the all-MacLen purity of AHDN ). “I Call Your Name ” would be a good candidate.

I read somewhere once that “I Call Your Name ” WAS being planned for HARD DAYS NIGHT but was considered too similar to “You Can’t Do That “, so it was pulled. My own feeling is they included it on the Long Tall Sally EP because, otherwise, there would have been no Lennon-McCartney songs (and therefore no composer royalties) on LTS.
As far as “I’ll Cry Instead ” — I’m glad John sang it. It DOES fit Ringo’s C&W style… but you just can’t beat that Lennon Larynx.
I've got nothing to say, but it's okay..

Although John and Paul did not really like “You Know What To Do,” it was going to be put on A Hard Day’s Night . They used Ringo being sick as an excuse to not include it on the album. Interestingly, on the demo of “No Reply ,” which was recorded on the same day (6/3/64), a drummer could be heard. If they really liked the song, they would have used that drummer, or Jimmy Nicol.
"The world is a very serious and, at times, very sad place - but at other times it is all such a joke."-George Harrison
Wasn’t the drummer reckoned to be Norman Smith, the studio engineer? I might be wrong – haven’t got time to check the latest theories. I can’t imagine they’d record a song without Ringo though, especially not Jimmy Nicol who they’d only just met.

You Know What To Do would’ve been a good canidate. The song could’ve been taken more seriously. Though Paul could’ve possibly be on Drums, and overdub a bass part. At least give George a chance, though it would destroy the Lennon/McCartney essence of the album. Possibly a song could’ve been scribbled and recorded as a last minute resort.

John C Winn wrote the highly respected three volume set ‘Way Beyond Compare: 1957 – 1965’, ‘That Magic Feeling: 1966 – 1970’ and ‘Lifting Latches’ that documented and analysed the Beatles recording sessions and tape logs. Very good books they are, well worth seeking out.

The fact that it went on the White Album in place of Not Guilty is the real shocker!

Not really. Ringo was always going to have 2 vocals on the double lp White Album , following on from the unwritten not always the case rule that he had a vocal on each?album, if Not Guilty was going to be included it was one of Georges that would have had to be omitted – despite George having 3 lead vocals on?With The Beatles and Revolver .
Anyway the rule when putting the album together was George gets 1 song per side and Ringo 1 song per disc. Was Not Guilty even in the final reckoning, i have a feeling it was already in the discard pile.

Yeah, that makes sense – especially considering that “When I Get Home ” also sounds somewhat similar to “You Can’t Do That “, with that mid-tempo cowbell-rock vibe. They realily didn’t need three of those on one album, particularly when two of them are back-to-back. (I would’ve preferred YCDT as the album closer instead of “I’ll Be Back “, although the latter song does have the more appropriate title.)

Yes, if it was to go against I Call Your Name and When I Get Home , I think most people have the same opinions.
Though there is still one more candidate I haven’t seen mentioned above, A World Without Love was given to Peter and Gordon sometime in February 1964, so, it is possible if they ever did that song professionally, it could have very well made a slot on the album, plus, I’m pretty sure they would put a McCartney composition considering he only had three.

But it still would’ve been an album of all original compositions. I’ve often wondered whether George would’ve gotten more of his own songs on the group’s albums had he started showing an interest in songwriting earlier than he ultimately did.

^ It’s possible, but even once George started showing an interest, it took time for J and P to accept that his songs were worthy of being on an album (at least some of them). The fact is they weren’t prepared to help him mature musically and give him a chance. I’m not saying that George was brilliant and so were all his songs but he could have started getting more songs on the albums sooner, I think, had they have been willing to let him.
