A Hard Days Night album that is.  As I mentioned somewhere, I recently got a new (used) car that has a CD player in it.  I’ve spent the past 2+ years without a CD player in my car & I missed it so much.

Anyway – it’s been great to play my Beatles discs again…but the one I’m addicted to for whatever reason is AHDN !  I think that entire album is somewhat under-rated.  The harmonies on that album are second to none.  It’s like “re-discovery” when you haven’t listened to it fully in years!   I’m diggin’ it  a-hard-days-night-john-1

Isn’t it great?  I agree it does tend to be under-rated.  I listen to “I Should Have Known Better ” a lot because it’s great for practicing guitar (plus it’s a great song)!  a-hard-days-night-john-1

It IS a great song.  You can’t help but tap your toes on that number!!  Didn’t realize (cause I’m not a guitar player) that its a good one for the guitar too. Cool!

I love AHDN . It’s my favorite of the soundtrack albums, that’s for sure.

I really love the UK version over the US one. I have the UK one on cd and the US on vinyl. I say its one of the least played of my Beatles vinyls that I have right now.

^^ This is where my knowledge fails me…. how is it different? Just the track listing?

I thought the UK version had all the musical numbers on it.  Is that the difference?

There some awesome songs on this album.  “When I Get Home ” is a real fav right now.  I mean..first off the harmonies…*sigh* very, very awesome.  Then, I love the line “get out my way, I’m gonna see my baby today”…when my youngest was little..he said that all the time “get out my way”!!  Then the line “I’m gonna love her till the cows come home” a-hard-days-night-john-1heart  Love it!

The UK album featured one side of songs from the film (A Hard Day’s Night , I Should Have Known Better , If I Fell , I’m Happy Just To Dance With You , And I Love Her , Tell Me Why and Can’t Buy Me Love ), and a second side of non-film songs (Any Time At All , I’ll Cry Instead , Things We Said Today , When I Get Home , You Can’t Do That and I’ll Be Back ).

In America, released by United Artists, it was a true soundtrack album. It didn’t include any songs from the second side of the UK album with the exception of I’ll Cry Instead (which was in the running for the film for a long time), but added the George Martin’s instrumentals heard in the film. The tracklisting for the US version was: Side 1) A Hard Day’s Night , Tell Me Why , Ill Cry Instead, I Should Have Known Better (GM instrumental), I’m Happy Just To Dance With You , And I Love Her (GM instrumental); Side 2) I Should Have Known Better , If I Fell , And I Love Her , Ringo’s Theme (This Boy ) (GM instrumental), Can’t Buy Me Love A Hard Day’s Night (GM instrumental).

I should also have added, going back to Emily’s original question about if it was just the tracklisting, the cover was also completely different:

And also that the UK version of A Hard Day’s Night was the basis of Something New on Capitol in America, with the addition of a few strays. Four songs from each side of the UK version, 2 from the UK Long Tall Sally  ep, and one of the German tracks. Side 1) I’ll Cry Instead ; Things We Said Today ; Any Time at All; When I Get Home ; Slow Down ; Matchbox ; Side 2) Tell Me Why ; And I Love Her ; I’m Happy Just To Dance With You ; If I Fell ; Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand .

The same was done with the Help ! soundtrack in America, but on that occasion by Capitol.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-15 Thanks AGAIN, Mja.  These UK/US issue albums get confusing sometimes. When I was younger, a fellow I knew had the US version with the instrumentals and told me he’d gotten it “imported from England” trying to impress me.  That’s actually pretty funny “if” he got the US version imported from the UK!  a-hard-days-night-ringo-6

The easiest way to look at it is that, with the exception of Capitol’s Magical Mystery Tour , the individual CDs are the UK albums. While the US albums are available in CD box-sets, the stand-alone CDs are the albums that were released in the UK during the ’60s.

Yeah, I knew the cover was different (I love the US one), and I knew they included the George M tracks, as well. I suppose I never put 2 and 2 together to work out that that must mean that the tracks we have, they can’t have because of lack of room.

Thanks for your assistance, yet again, mja!! :D

Ah, the Capitol Albums box set. I just got Volume 1, and it’s a trip to hear the fake stereo mixes and different variations of songs that made it to America (like Paul’s voice giving out in “If I Fell .”) I know people are sharply divided about those U.S. albums, but I think it’s great to have them for completists like me who missed the initial releases of those albums and want them just for the heck of it.

Completely agree. I love this album for it’s energy and optimism and because it sounds so bloody good!  Things We Said Today is a particular fave of mine. Funny, I never thought of it as a soundtrack album but of course it is. Haven’t yet seen AHDN , I’m on a waiting list at the library.

Things We Said Today is pretty mature for it’s time.

I love AHDN (talking about the film, while I obviously love the album as well), you won’t regret watching it. It’s really good for 4 guys who are acting for the first time.

AHDN is by far the best pop band film with a sensible plot and no sudden moments of stupidly bursting into song and dancing with mates, the nearest we get is John singing If I Fell to Ringoheart

But done in a fun way as neither is taking it seriously. I love how John is meant to be strumming his guitar but instead pesters Ringo up close.
