There is no general topic for ‘Abbey Road ‘ and i have nowhere else to post this. Anyone got any suggestions for where it can go let a mod know and it will get shifted.
Posted over at the oldiesmusicblog – ‘The Language Of The Beatles Abbey Road ‘.

Fascinating. I will pass this along to my best friend from high school. She does a lot of work with English language learners at her university.

Was listening to this yesterday on the way to and from my interview. It had been a few months and it’s a stunning listen right from the opening of ‘Come Together ‘ to the closing chord of ‘Her Majesty ‘.
‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer ‘ has to be the jolliest happiest song ever about a mass murderer (we hear him kill three but there will be so many more) – love the siren warning going off before the judge gets it (and he gets it good).
Paul’s vocal on ‘Oh Darling’ usually gets the credit and praise but listen to the instrumentation on its own (hunt it down), they are nailed in as a band.
‘I Want You (She’s So Heavy)’ is so heavy and intense but brilliant in how it does it (suiting the theme of the song) and is perfectly followed by the light and breezy (atmosphere not content) ‘Here Comes The Sun ‘.
I doubt on first listen anyone has any idea where the album will go when the piano chords open ‘You Never Give Me Your Money ‘, i doubt you could be prepared (unless you are in a pretentious mood where you are already determined to think its too clever – its not, you couldnt be that intelligent). If you haven’t yet track down take 35 of ‘Sun King /Mean Mister Mustard’, its a gorgeous blast of a ride.
And listen thru earphones to Ringo’s drum solo in ‘The End ‘, the mixing is subtle but so awesome in how its done. I only heard for the first time yesterday and i had to go back a few times.

Like most Beatles albums there is still stuff you didn’t hear/get before no matter how many times you have heard it 🙂 I always thought that ‘siren’ sound must be Max himself in full murderous flow! I can put that album on in my van on a long journey twice and still enjoy every last drop!
I currently have the dubious distinction of being the only person on youtube that has attempted to play a (shortened) version of the whole of the Abbey Road Medley unplugged on an acoustic guitar. It was back in 2007 and it isn’t that great but it took me so long to learn I’ve left it on there! Abbey Road is my second favourite Beatles album.

Wow, nice observation – however many hundred times I’ve heard that track, I don’t know that I’ve ever interpreted that one moog-sound as a siren! It makes sense, absolutely. More of an evocation than a mere imitation.
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I have to say I’ve grown a new admiration for this album, now that I started wearing my beats headphones, not since the 2009 CD releases. Although I play my music loud in the car, there is much more subtle things I hear on the headphones that I’ve never really noticed before. Especially on this LP!!
Big diff. compared to the Apple headphones that come with the iPod/iPhone, since now I hear a lot deeper Bass, and this LP has a lot of good clear Bass.
Phil Spector’s got nothing on this George Martin recording!

Maxwell’s S H….works as a nursery rhyme…..Paul’s answer to Cry Baby Cry with a bit more Punch (and Judy). I dramatised it once for kids.
But my least favorite on the album
I had two girl friends who were mates together called ‘Rose and Valerie’ (Valerie never knew about Rose)!! I still always think of them when I hear this and shudder at what Valerie would have done had she caught us…… Brought her silver down on my head I reckoned……..Though she may done Rose first.

Everyone who uses Apples ear/headphones should throw them in the bin and go buy some decent ones – they are dreadful, muffling and deadening the music. You don’t have to expensive ones; look at reviews and your budget and as long as you purchase wisely you’ll discover a whole new world.

I usually go for Sennheiser. Prices vary depending on your budget and they are damn good.
Good advice this!
And great album. Listened to it for the first time in a decade myself late last year and was blown away; the second “side” in particular I can still listen to time and again.

Does it ever big anyone else that The End isn’t the last song, and that they had to sneak in Her Majesty to take the final credit??
I find it to be one of those little things that the Beatles would do to just add their little bit of confusion or difference from the rest.

I don’t have a problem with it because it isn’t really part of the album and there’s about a 20 second gap after The End before Her Majesty . For me, The End is the real closing track and Her Majesty is just a little surprise at the end after you assumed the album was over. If Her Majesty was part of the medley, as it was originally intended, I would have had a much bigger problem with it.
If you’re bothered by Her Majesty , just stop the album before it comes on, just like I don’t listen to the jam tracks when I listen to All Things Must Pass .
