George Harrison live: Tokyo Dome, Tokyo

The 12th and final date of George Harrison and Eric Clapton’s 1991 Rock Legends tour of Japan took place at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo on 17 December 1991.

This was the last of three non-consecutive dates at the Tokyo Dome. Harrison’s son Dhani joined the band on stage for the encores, as did Nick Roylance, the son of Genesis Publications owner Brian Roylance.

‘Old Brown Shoe’ and ‘What Is Life’ from this night appear on the 1992 album Live In Japan, as does an edit of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ recorded on this night and 14 December.

Tickets for the tour dates, which were billed as ‘Rock Legends: George Harrison live with Eric Clapton and his band’, went on sale on Sunday 20 October 1991, with a handful of extra dates added to meet demand.

The tour consisted of 12 concerts in December 1991. It was Harrison’s second and final tour, following the 1974 Dark Horse Tour, and was commemorated with the 1992 album Live In Japan.

Harrison performed the bulk of the songs, with Clapton taking a lead role for four songs in the middle of the set. The other members of the band were Andy Fairweather Low on rhythm guitar and vocals; Nathan East on bass guitar and vocals; Chuck Leavell on piano, organ, keyboards, and vocals; Greg Phillinganes on keyboards and vocals; Steve Ferrone on drums; Ray Cooper on drums and percussion; and Katie Kissoon and Tessa Niles on vocals.
