The recording of John Lennon’s fourth solo album Mind Games began on 1 August 1973.
The album sessions took place at New York’s Record Plant studio. The musicians for the basic backing tracks were Lennon, David Spinozza (guitar), Ken Ascher (piano, organ), Gordon Edwards (bass guitar), and Jim Keltner (drums, percussion).
On this day they worked on three songs: ‘I Know (I Know)’, which had the working title ‘Today I Know’; ‘Rock And Roll People’, which remained unreleased until 1986; and ‘Tight A$’.
‘I Know (I Know)’ was recorded in 24 takes. ‘Rock And Roll People’ was finished in seven takes, followed by four incomplete takes of ‘Tight A$’. The song was returned to on 5 August.
The Mind Games recording sessions continued until 20 August, after which the songs were mixed and edited.
