The first of two recording sessions for the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band’s single ‘Power To The People’ took place on 22 January 1971. It was held at Ascot Sound Studios at Lennon’s Tittenhurst Park home.

Eleven takes were recorded. Lennon was on acoustic guitar for the first, but moved to piano for the remainder of the takes. He was accompanied by Klaus Voormann on bass guitar, Jim Gordon on drums, and Bobby Keys on saxophone.

The eight-track tape had echo on track 1; Gordon’s drums on 2 and 3; Voormann’s bass on 4; Lennon’s piano on 5 and vocals on 6; Keys’s saxophone on 7; and a vocal overdub on 8.

‘Power To The People’ was completed later that the evening at a separate session at EMI Studios, Abbey Road.
