Recording, mixing: Remember, Love, Mother, Well Well Well by John Lennon

Studio Three, EMI Studios, Abbey Road
Producers: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector
Engineers: Phil McDonald, John Leckie

The tenth recording session for John Lennon’s debut solo album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, took place on 19 October 1970.

Four songs were worked on: ‘Remember’, ‘Love’, ‘Mother’, and ‘Well Well Well’.

Lennon overdubbed two jaw harp takes onto ‘Remember’, the second of which replaced the original live vocals. Lennon also recorded a harmony vocal part on this day, after which the recording was complete.

Lennon and Phil Spector then recorded 27 takes of ‘Love’. They were numbered 12-38, with Lennon on acoustic guitar and Spector on piano. The master was take 37, onto which Lennon recorded a vocal overdub to complete the song.

Takes 37 and 38 were recorded almost back-to-back, and during the mixing session a brief silence between the takes was removed, which created the piano coda heard on the album version.

‘Mother’ then received its final overdub, a vocal part by Lennon, before the song was mixed in stereo. However, during another mixing session on 24 October it was decided to use his vocals from 17 October instead.

The 19 October session concluded with stereo mixes of ‘Remember’ and ‘Well Well Well’. The final mixes were made on 24 and 29 October respectively.
