This was The Beatles’ only visit to Wigan, a town in the north of England. It was the fourth date of their 1964 British tour.
The group performed two concerts on this evening, for which they were paid £850. Their set contained 10 songs: ‘Twist And Shout’, ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’, ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, ‘Things We Said Today’, ‘I’m Happy Just To Dance With You’, ‘I Should Have Known Better’, ‘If I Fell’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ and ‘Long Tall Sally’.
The support acts on the tour were The Rustiks, Sounds Incorporated, Michael Haslam, The Remo Four, Tommy Quickly and Mary Wells, and the compère was Bob Bain. The evening’s two shows began at 6.20pm and 8.35pm.
The Odeon had opened in March 1938 as the Ritz, but was renamed in 1963. It closed in April 1997 and was demolished in 2005.

I was there. I was 6 years old at the time and my mates big sister took us to the 6.20 show. All I can remember are figures on the stage in blue suits and you couldn’t hear anything over the screaming. The had to stop the show for a short while because someone had published in a magazine that Paul like Dolly Mixture sweets and girls were throwing them at him and he got one in his eye.
This was the day I was born ,my claim to fame is they came to Wigan to visit me haha x
I was one of four people who was working back stage on this night, They arrived late and had not eaten. One of the crew went to a milk bar across the road and came back with a large white jug, bowls, and spoons. We had time to chat in the wings before the shows. They signed four programs for me and I gave them all away the next day. What a fool I was.!
they were late as they were celebrating pauls birthday
Regarding the Beatles visit to Wigan. They were late because their car had broken down on the motorway. They were picked up by sympathetic police officers and were taken to the venue, arriving late but still gave a brief press conference all a long time ago.
They left by the back entrance to the cinema, thus avoiding vans. As a local reporter I attended both concerts and didn’t hear a thing. happy days ….
Regarding the Beatles Wigan Concert on 13 10 64.
My name is Wayne Cross and I was an apprentice with a Wigan company at the time and my Boss got me two free tickets to the Concert.
I gave one to my girlfriend Elaine Ashworth and one to our friend Linda Morse. We were 17 years old and frequented the Brunswick Methodist Youth Club in Earlestown, Newton-Le-Willows at the time.
Dose anyone remember us and the Club. If so I would love to hear from you.
