The Tollie label (named after Tollie Carter) was formed in early 1964 as a subsidiary of Vee-Jay Records. Whether it was originally formed specifically for Beatles releases is unknown, but what is known is that “Twist and Shout” was its’ first release. One further Beatles release was on Tollie… “Love Me Do”/“PS, I Love You”. Tollie wasn’t around very long, shutting down not long after Vee-Jay lost its rights to the early Beatles recordings in late ‘64.
For collectors only, the 45 picture sleeve shown is for the Italian release, which was nothing more than a US Tollie pressing housed in a specially printed sleeve. Just like Vee-Jay releases, Tollie pressings have a number of different label variations to drive collectors crazy.
I have the Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You 45, Tollie T-9008, which I bought when it came out. The sleeve has the same drawing of the Beatles, with a purple background instead of the green. Mine also has a sticker that says 88¢ (cents) 🙂
