The second of The Beatles’ six consecutive dates in the English seaside town of Southport, Lancashire, took place on 27 August 1963. They played two houses on each night.
They played the same set of 10 songs throughout the residency: ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, ‘Thank You Girl’, ‘Chains’, ‘A Taste Of Honey’, ‘She Loves You’, ‘Baby It’s You’, ‘From Me To You’, ‘Boys’, ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, and ‘Twist And Shout’.

My first concert, in what was my hometown, with The Beatles ending up with a superb rendition of Twist and Shout, which I think was released that week on an EP! An amazing evening, with The Beatles headlining the full Brian Epstein management stable of Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Searchers, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Tommy Quigley and Cilla Black, in her first major performance. All that, twice nightly for six nights in a row, in a venue where I usually went to see a film.
